What's Included When You Choose Shaker or Modern Cabinets

  • Free design consultation with CAD visuals showing your kitchen laid out in both Shaker and modern styles before you decide
  • Made-to-measure carcasses and doors cut to your room's exact dimensions rather than standard sizes
  • Frame-and-panel joinery for Shaker doors, or CNC-cut flat panels for modern doors, made by City & Guilds qualified joiners
  • A choice of solid wood, painted MDF, laminate or veneer, sprayed in-house to any colour including Farrow & Ball and Little Greene matches
  • Hardware fitting - soft-close hinges, drawer runners, and your choice of handles, knobs or handle-less push systems
  • Installation, plus any plumbing, electrical or gas connection work the new kitchen needs, carried out by our own qualified trades rather than sub-contractors
  • Removal of your old kitchen and waste, cleared under our own registered waste carrier licence

Not Included / Costed Separately

  • Worktop material itself - granite, quartz, Dekton and other stone or laminate surfaces are quoted as a separate specialism, not part of the cabinet price
  • Kitchen appliances such as ovens, hobs and fridges, which are priced separately from the cabinets
  • Handle-less push mechanisms and premium high-gloss or lacquer finishes, which typically add £50-£100 per door on top of a standard specification
  • Structural alterations such as knocking through a wall or moving a window - these need building regulations sign-off and are costed separately once surveyed

How a Shaker or Modern Kitchen Comes Together

  1. Style consultation -- We talk through your home's architecture and how your family actually uses the kitchen, show door samples in both Shaker and modern finishes, and put together a CAD design so you can see the layout before committing to either style.
  2. Written quote and design agreement -- You receive a written agreement covering the cabinet style, materials, hardware and total cost, so there's nothing left to guess at once work starts.
  3. Manufacturing -- Cabinets are cut and assembled to your exact measurements - a full kitchen typically takes around three weeks, with Shaker's frame-and-panel joinery or bespoke sizing sometimes adding time.
  4. Installation -- Our own joiners fit the cabinets on site, with plumbing, electrical or gas connection work carried out by our qualified in-house trades where the kitchen needs it - usually around a week for a full room.
  5. Completion and handover -- Your old kitchen and any waste are cleared under our registered waste carrier licence, and you're talked through the finished cabinets, hardware adjustments and any guarantee paperwork before we leave.

The Trades Behind Your Cabinets

Whichever style you choose, the joinery, wiring and pipework behind it are carried out by the same qualified trades. Frame-and-panel Shaker doors and flat modern panels are both built and fitted by City & Guilds qualified joiners; any electrical work needed to move sockets or add cabinet lighting is installed and safety-certified by a Part P approved electrician, and gas hobs or range cookers are connected only by a Gas Safe registered engineer. A master plasterer handles any making-good once cabinets come out and go back in, and your old kitchen is cleared away under our own registered waste carrier licence rather than handed off to a third party.

We're members of the Construction Industry Training Board and the Federation of Small Businesses, and every project starts with a free, no-obligation design consultation and CAD visuals before you're asked to commit to anything - finance options are available if you'd rather spread the cost.

Where We Design and Fit Shaker and Modern Kitchens

Most of our Shaker and modern cabinet projects are in Doncaster and its surrounding suburbs - Bentley, Balby, Rossington, Thorne, Armthorpe, Hatfield, Cantley and Edenthorpe among them - where period terraces and 1960s-80s semis sit close together, which is why the style advice above leans on real examples from those streets rather than generic guidance. We're based at 49A Avondale Road in Rotherham, and from there we also design, supply and fit kitchens further out across South Yorkshire and into Sheffield, Barnsley, Leeds, Wakefield and York, as well as over into Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Derby, Derbyshire and Hull for clients who want the full design-supply-install service handled by one crew rather than several separate tradesmen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Shaker and modern kitchen cabinets?

Shaker cabinets feature frame and panel construction with a raised centre panel surrounded by flat frames, creating traditional character and visual depth. Modern cabinets use flat panel (slab) doors with clean lines and minimal detail, often incorporating handle-less designs for contemporary sophistication.

Which cabinet style is more popular in the UK?

Shaker styles remain most popular overall, chosen by approximately 60% of UK homeowners. However, modern styles are gaining popularity, especially in contemporary homes and among younger buyers. Regional preferences vary significantly, with period properties strongly favouring traditional styles.

Do Shaker or modern cabinets cost more?

Shaker cabinets typically cost 10-15% more due to additional joinery work required for frame and panel construction. However, handle-less modern systems can cost more than traditional Shaker with standard hardware. Quality and finish specifications affect cost more than basic style choice.

Which style is better for resale value?

Both styles can add value when well-executed. Shaker has broader market appeal and works well in most property types. Modern styles appeal strongly to contemporary lifestyle buyers but may limit potential buyer pool. Quality of construction and installation matters more than specific style choice.

Can you mix Shaker and modern elements?

Yes, hybrid approaches can work well. Common combinations include Shaker-style frames with modern proportions, traditional door styles with contemporary hardware, or mixing cabinet styles within the same kitchen. Success depends on careful design coordination and professional execution.

How do I choose between Shaker and modern for my home?

Consider your home's architecture, personal style preferences, family needs, and long-term plans. Period properties often suit traditional styles, while contemporary homes work well with modern cabinets. Visit showrooms to see both styles in person and consider how they'll work with your lifestyle.

Are modern cabinets harder to keep clean than Shaker?

Modern flat panels are generally easier to clean due to fewer crevices and details. However, high-gloss modern finishes show fingerprints more than matt Shaker finishes. Shaker frame edges can collect dust and grease but hide everyday marks better than flat surfaces.

Which cabinet style works better in small kitchens?

Modern flat panel cabinets often work better in small kitchens as clean lines can make spaces appear larger. However, light-coloured Shaker cabinets can also work well. The key is choosing light colours and ensuring good lighting regardless of style choice.
