What's Included When You Book a Walk-in Closet Project
- A free design consultation and 3D visuals showing how the finished layout will look before you commit to anything
- Made-to-measure hanging rails, drawer runs and shelving sized around your actual wardrobe rather than standard dimensions
- A mix of wire shelving (ventilated, budget-friendly) and wood shelving (better finish, stronger for display or heavier items), used where each works best
- LED strip lighting inside hanging areas, ceiling spotlights and motion-sensor switching
- Pull-out mirrors, valet rails, adjustable shelving and internal drawers for smaller items
- Conversion of box rooms, under-stair space, spare bedrooms and attic space into a working walk-in area
- Protection of existing flooring and furniture during the fit, and a check of every drawer, door and hinge before the job is signed off
Not Included / Costed Separately
- Structural alterations needed to create the space itself, such as removing a wall or converting a loft with restricted head height, which are surveyed and priced as a separate stage of work
- Damp-proofing for basement conversions, where the space isn't already damp-proofed, is treated as additional work carried out before any joinery goes in
- Walk-in closets built inside kitchen areas aren't something we offer, though we do build walk-in pantries using the same shelving and zoning principles
From First Measure to Finished Closet: How the Job Runs
- Free design consultation -- We visit or talk it through by phone, take initial measurements of the box room, attic space, under-stair void or spare bedroom you're converting, and discuss how you actually want to use the space - hanging, shelving, shoes, accessories - before anything is designed.
- CAD layout and written quotation -- You get a 3D visual of the finished layout, a choice between wire shelving and wood shelving for each zone, a lighting plan if you want LED strips or spotlights, and a written quotation. No work starts until you've agreed it.
- Made-to-measure manufacture -- Walk-in closets usually go into rooms that were never built for the job - odd angles under stairs, sloped attic ceilings, box rooms that aren't quite square - so the hanging rails, drawer units and shelving are built to the exact dimensions of that space rather than adapted from a standard flat-pack system.
- First fix and site protection -- Existing flooring and furniture are protected before any work starts. Where the design includes LED strips, spotlights or motion-sensor switching, our Part P approved electricians run and test the cabling before the joinery goes in.
- Installation and second fix -- City & Guilds qualified joiners fit the rails, shelving, drawer units, pull-out mirrors and valet rails, and the electrician completes the lighting and switching so it's working, not just wired in.
- Final check and clearance -- Every drawer, door and hinge is checked before the job is signed off, and any old wardrobes or offcuts are cleared away under our own registered waste carrier licence.
Built-in Wardrobe or Walk-in Closet: How They Compare
| Built-in Wardrobe | Walk-in Closet | |
|---|---|---|
| Space needed | Fits along one existing wall, no extra floor area given up | From around 1.5m x 1.5m for a compact conversion, 2m x 3m if two people need to dress at once |
| Typical cost | Generally the lower-cost option for straightforward storage | From roughly £3,000 for a basic conversion up to £15,000+ for a full luxury fit-out |
| Best suited to | Standard bedroom layouts where floor space is tight and budget is the main driver | Spare bedrooms, box rooms, attics or larger bedrooms where you can dedicate the space |
| Storage style | Hanging, shelving and drawers behind a single run of doors | Separate zones for work clothes, casual wear, shoes and accessories, all visible at a glance |
The Same Joiners and Electricians We'd Use on a Kitchen, Scaled to a Closet
A walk-in closet is a smaller job than a kitchen, but it asks for two things that don't always come from the same fitter: joinery accurate enough for an awkward, non-standard room, and electrical work done properly rather than bodged in afterwards. Box rooms, converted attics and under-stair spaces are rarely square or a consistent width, so the hanging rails, drawer units and shelving are measured and built to fit that specific room rather than adapted from a flat-pack system - the same made-to-measure approach we'd use building a fitted kitchen from scratch. Where the design includes LED strip lighting, ceiling spotlights or motion-sensor switching, that wiring is run and tested by our Part P approved electricians rather than left to whoever fitted the wardrobe, and the cabinetry itself is built by City & Guilds qualified joiners. Old wardrobes and offcuts are cleared under our own registered waste carrier licence, and the finished closet carries the same 5-year labour and installation guarantee as everything else we fit.
Areas We Design and Fit Walk-in Closets In
We're based at 49A Avondale Road in Rotherham and cover Doncaster and the wider South Yorkshire area, including Rotherham, Sheffield and Barnsley. Around Doncaster itself that's meant working with a real mix of property types: Victorian terraces in Wheatley Hills where a walk-in closet has to be squeezed into an awkward original room shape, older terraces around Balby where floor space is at a premium, and newer builds in areas like Lakeside where the usual problem is a boxy spare room with no obvious storage plan. Across the DN postcode areas we've converted period box rooms, under-stair space where the ceiling height allows it, and the occasional basement, which needs proper damp-proofing before any joinery goes in.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Layout Works Best for Your Space?
Most people think you need a mansion to have a proper walk-in closet. That's rubbish. We've created brilliant walk-in solutions in homes across Rossington, Edlington, and even some of those compact new builds in Lakeside. Straight Layout Design Perfect for narrow spaces or converted spare rooms. We install storage along one wall with hanging rails at different heights. Works brilliantly in many Doncaster homes where space is tight. L-Shaped Configuration Uses two walls to create distinct zones. Maybe hanging space on one wall, shelving and drawers on the other. Great for couples who want their own areas. U-Shaped Walk-in Design The dream setup when you've got the room. Storage on three walls with space in the middle for getting dressed. We've installed these in some beautiful properties in
How Much Space Do You Actually Need?
This is always the first question we get. The honest answer? It depends on what you're trying to achieve. Minimum Space Requirements You can create a functional walk-in area in a space as small as 1.5m x 1.5m. We've done it in some of the older terraces around Balby where every centimetre counts. Ideal Dimensions For a comfortable walk-in closet where two people can move around each other, you're looking at roughly 2m x 3m. This gives enough space for hanging, shelving, and a small area for getting dressed. Luxury Sizing When space isn't an issue (lucky you!), we can design walk-in closets that include seating areas, full-length mirrors, and even small vanity stations.
What's the Difference Between Wire and Wood Shelving?
Both have their place in walk-in closet design. Here's our honest take: Wire Shelving Cost-effective option Good ventilation for clothes Easy to see through to items behind Can leave marks on delicate fabrics Limited colour options Wood Shelving More attractive finish Supports heavier items better Can be painted to match decor Higher upfront cost Better for displaying shoes and accessories We often use a combination of both. Wire shelving works well for everyday clothes storage, while wood shelving is perfect for display areas and heavier items.
How Do You Plan Storage Zones for Different Types of Clothing?
This is where our experience really shows. We've organised wardrobes for everyone from busy mums in Adwick to executives commuting to Sheffield daily. Work Clothes Zone Suits, dress shirts, formal wear - these need proper hanging space and easy access. Usually positioned at eye level for quick selection. Casual Wear Area T-shirts, jeans, weekend clothes can go in drawers or on shelves. These don't need prime real estate but should still be easily accessible. Seasonal Storage Winter coats, holiday clothes, formal wear you rarely use - these can go on higher shelves or in less accessible areas. Daily Essentials Underwear, socks, gym gear - keep these in drawers at waist height for easy morning access.
Can Walk-in Closets Work in Kitchen Areas?
Interesting question! While we don't typically install walk-in closets in kitchens, we have created walk-in pantries that use similar organisational principles. The storage concepts translate well between spaces.
What About Converting Existing Spaces?
Many of our Doncaster clients convert spare bedrooms, large cupboards, or unused nooks into walk-in closets. We've successfully converted: Box rooms in period properties Under-stair spaces (with good ceiling height) Part of large bedrooms Unused attic spaces Even some basement areas with proper damp-proofing
